What is Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling is a popular cosmetic dermatological procedure that repairs and rejuvenates skin damaged by aging, sun exposure, wrinkling and acne. Microneedling can also reduce large pores and treat other skin aberrations. Microneedling devices have been approved by the U.S. FDA for improving the appearance of facial wrinkles, acne scars and abdominal scars in adults. Approval by the FDA means the agency has reviewed a comprehensive amount of research data that supports the effectiveness and safety of microneedling and microneedling devices.

When a microneedling "roller" equipped with tiny, fine needles is gently moved over the skin, it stimulates production of collagen by inducing a harmless inflammatory response. Collagen's firming matrix not only creates new skin tissue but also helps skin become smoother, firmer and more evenly textured.

Combining microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has been clinically shown to provide a "statistically significant benefit" to PRP therapy. One study found that 60 percent of 50 people undergoing PRP and microneedling reported excellent to good improvements to skin appearance and tone.

The U.S. FDA has approved dozens of PRP devices for use by licensed cosmetic dermatologists. Platelets collected for PRP therapy are specialized cells circulating within the bloodstream that bind together to promote healing of damaged soft tissues and blood vessels. Activation of platelets also plays a vital role in healing musculoskeletal disorders, development of blood clots to stop excessive bleeding and provide growth factors to promote new tissue growth.

Chicago Med Spa Now Offers Microneedling with PRP to Help You Achieve Your Skin Goals

Microneedling with PRP can reduce or even eliminate visibility of unattractive skin problems such as:

  • Uneven skin texture and tone

  • Enlarged pores (aging, excessive oil and sun damage are the leading causes of large pores)

  • Hyperpigmentation (sun spots, age spots, melasma, acne hyperpigmentation)

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Minor surgical scarring

Microneedling with PRP at Chicago Med Spa is a two-step process that begins with microneedling of problem skin areas. This step involves treating skin with the roller device and takes less than 45 minutes. A small amount of blood drawn from your arm is then centrifuged to separate platelet-rich plasma from other blood components.

The second part of a microneedling with PRP treatment session has your doctor massaging PRP into microneedled areas of your skin. Once this step is completed, you will have a different solution applied that reduces minor irritation and redness.

How Many Microneedling with PRP Treatments are Needed to See Desired Results?

The number of treatments needed to achieve expected results depends on the severity of a skin problem. Deep scars or darker than normal age spots may require several treatments. As more collagen is produced by the body in response to microneedling with PRP, the faster you will see skin improvements.

If you are fighting the effects of aging on your skin, rest assured you can safely have repeated microneedling with PRP treatments to keep your skin looking smooth and ageless.

Your doctor will answer your questions and discuss your concerns during your initial consultation appointment at Chicago Med Spa.

What to Expect After Microneedling with PRP

For about four or five days after treatment, you can expect to experience minimal soreness, redness and mild bruising. Normal effects of healing include minor swelling, oozing and development of white papules called milia on the skin. All these side effects are normal and subside within a week after treatment. You can take acetaminophen to ease discomfort if necessary.
